Located at the center of Portugal, just 40 minutes away from Coimbra, is the city of Aveiro. This place contains an unique atmosphere given by its typical boats (Moliceiros), which are often compared to the Venetian Gondolas, as well as its 20th Century architecture, in the style of Art Noveau, connected by cobbled passages that extend along the water channel coming from the Lagoon.
The Lagoon of Aveiro formed itself during a process caused by the recession of sea waters in the 16th Century, which led to the formation of coastal strings and generated this body of water similar to a lagoon. The Lagoon is also the river mouth of the Vouga River, which lends it a unique beauty along the Portuguese shoreline. Here are located the salines and extremely fertile soils for the practice of agriculture, two of the main motors of the local economy which have been providing for its populations during the last hundreds of years.
We will visit all these places on our way to the Lighthouse of Barra. This is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal and one of the tallest in all of Europe, built in 1893, as it stands high above sea level at around 66 meters! If you reserve your tour for a Wednesday it will be possible to enjoy one the most beautiful coastal views in the country, that's if you find the courage to climb all of its 288 steps!
After witnessing such an imposing construction our visit continues to Costa Nova! There you will be able to taste the delicious “tripa” - a typical snack that will leave you crying for more! Though the real attraction of Costa Nova are its Palheiros: typical houses with vertical stripes painted in a variety of colors. These houses were in old times used by the fishermen for the salting of sardines or as a storage place for their fishing materials, though today its memory remains as bathing residences!
