During this full day tour, we will visit two of the most sacred places in Portugal: Fátima and Nazaré.
We will start our morning by visiting the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima: one of the most important sites of Veneration of Mary in the world, visited every year by upwards of 6 million people who are there trying to find a peaceful place in which they can express their devotion and fulfill their promises. The mass is celebrated in a variety of locations within the sanctuary, many times per day, so it will be possible for you to take part in one of these religious celebrations in a place that – despite the amounts of people that visit it – always inspires a sense of tranquility.
You will learn about the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Shepherds, as we visit the Chapel of the Apparitions from 1919, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary from 1950 and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity from 2007. During more recent years, with the Canonization of Jacinta and Francisco, the Sanctuary has been expanded with new art pieces and structures which we will also be visiting.
You will be given free time for lunch when we arrive to Nazaré, a place well known by its fresh fish and seafood!
Afterwards we will be taking a ride all the way up to “Sítio da Nazaré”. Here we shall visit the Chapel of the Memory, built in 1182 in a cave next to Nazaré Promontory marking the memory of the legend of Nazaré! We will also visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, a place that has received many pilgrimages over the centuries bringing together people from every social classes including the Royal Family.
From Farol da Nazaré we will have views over “Praia do Norte”, a very famous beach within the surfing community and mainly known as the place where Garrett McNamara surfed – for the first time - the tallest wave ever in 2011 which was precisely 23,77 meters tall! This amazing feature granted him a place on the Guinness Book of Records, as well as positioning Praia do Norte on the world map of surf! On the 8th of November 2017 this record was beaten by a Brazilian surfer called Rodrigo Koxa, having caught a wave 61cm taller than Garret’s wave (24,38 meters tall)!
Full Day Tour visiting the internationally known Marian Sanctuary of Fátima and the not so well-known but much older pilgrimage place of Nazaré, sitting over a beautiful cliff where giant waves are surfed!
