During this tour we will discover one of the most imposing defensive grids from the Medieval Ages in Portugal, attesting its contribution for the establishment of our nation! You will feel yourself going back in time as you get to know the Mondego's Defensive Line!
The tour starts in Coimbra, where you'll have the opportunity to learn more about the Portuguese Crusades and the medieval defensive systems that are still visible today: the city walls and towers. After understanding the strategic position of Coimbra and its defensive system, as well as the history during the Reconquest period, we will travel through the Mondego Agricultural Fields all the way to Montemor-o-Velho's Castle.
The Mondego River is the longest river exclusive to the Portuguese territory, running the country from the peaks of Serra da Estrela all the way into the Atlantic Ocean. It crosses the city of Coimbra, and it expands through an immense region of fertile soils where still today one can find vast crops of rice and corn. There's also a big presence of animal life be it the domestic cattle as well as wild species like ducks that come to feast on an abundance of rice or the storks that build their nests on the top of the electric distribution structures that cross this idyllic place.
After arriving at Montemor-o-Velho we will contemplate the beauty of its Castle, strategically settled at the top of a hill over the Mondego Agricultural Fields. From there the views are magnificent, and its very well-preserved structure will leave you breathless! It is a fantastic military construction, built during the Moorish occupation of the region and later inhabited by the members of the Portuguese Royal Court. Also connected to the history of this defensive structure are vestiges of the Templars, the passage of the French troops of Junot for the occasion of the Peninsular Wars (1810) and the legend of Pedro and Inês … stories that will be revealed during this unforgettable tour!
On the way back we’ll have time to stop in a traditional local pastry so you can learn about the Conventual Sweets of Tentúgal – a centenary secret recipe that you’ll probably want to taste!
